What We're Watchin...

Last night, we watched what should be required viewing for all, For the Bible Tells Me So...what an amazing documentary...here's the trailer...

Although religion can be a wonderful thing for many, it has throughout time, and to this day, also been used to bring about violence, degradation, war, torture and suppression of rights.
A while back, I had an epiphany on where I feel homophobia comes from and, interestingly enough, it was brought up in this documentary. I feel homophobia is actually anti-feminism. The empowered patriarchy is repulsed by the idea of men behaving in what they believe to be a stereotypically feminine manner. When it comes to the sexual relations between men, there is great abhorrence at the idea of a man being the "passive" one or the "receiver" as this is thought to be the woman's place. (On a side note: It is insulting when people ask gay couples, "so, who is the man and who is the woman in your relationship?"...uh, hello, we're both men...that's kinda the point...of course, what they're really asking is "who's top and who's bottom?", but why is that anyone else's business and why is it just one or the other??) In ancient times, after a battle, men would often anally rape those on the opposing side as this was considered the ultimate humiliation (Abu Ghraib, anyone?). Women dressing in what was once thought of as only men's clothing is no longer an issue, however, if a man dresses in a "feminine" manner, he is shunned. What are considered the "more obvious" homosexuals are those that behave in what is considered a fey or effiminate way and this is at odds with what society at large has been taught about how a man should behave. When the sports team performs poorly, how does the coach berate them...by calling them "little girls" (b/c to them, being a girl is an insult). Of course, as far as lesbians go, the patriarchal society is okay...as long as you're still "feminine" in appearance and willing to perform for the viewing pleasure of men. Once you appear like a "dyke", then you need to be put back in your place...you are not a man, don't act like you are one.
This is absolutely repulsing! No more hegemony!!
